About the event

Kalpulli Huehuetlahtolli dance group.

Connecting with ancestors through Aztec Water dance.

The Aztec Dance is an ancient and spiritual dance tradition that has been passed down through generations. It is known to be a form of meditation in motion, where the dancers are brought into a meditative state through the repetitive rhythm and movement. This meditative state is believed to channel energy and connect the dancers with the gods.

The Aztec Dance is not only a physical expression but also a representation of a connection between man and god, of body and soul. The dance is considered a sacred form of prayer and communication, where the dancers use their bodies to express their devotion and gratitude to the divine. The intricate movements of the dance tell stories of Aztec mythology and history, adding depth and meaning to the performance.

Through the Aztec Dance, one can experience not only the physical and mental benefits of meditation but also a connection to the rich cultural heritage of the Aztec people. It is a beautiful and powerful form of art that continues to inspire and captivate audiences around the world.

“We as indigenous people always believe in the interconnectedness of all creation and the energy that we all share,” said Aztec dancer Edward Jaramillo. “And the concept of some of the dances were that of regrowth and regeneration. It’s a way of coming together and being reborn.”

This event is possible by The Dance Commissioning Program (DCP) funded by the Mertz Gilmore Foundation  and Queens Council on the Arts in conjunction with Ofrenda Fest and Queens Public Library.
